And since both of them support hardware acceleration, the conversion is rather fast. Using the same settings, HandBrake and VLC will convert files at a similar speed. VLC: Mainstream digital video and audio formats, including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, AVI, FLV, WMV, ASF, WAV, FLAC, MP3, RAW, OGG, OGM, MPEG-TS, MPEG-PS, MJPEG, and MPEG 1. HandBrake: Only MP4, MKV, WebM, and a variety of presets VLC: Almost all digital video and audio formats, plus DVD Video, Video CD, Audio CD, and some protected DVD, Blu-ray sources. iMovie should be able to import directly from the AVCHD package on disk.HandBrake: All popular digital video formats and unprotected DVD, Blu-ray sources Using ClipWrap should not be necessary, this is just a troubleshooting procedure to figure out the problem. There is a free trial version: ClipWrap : Easy AVCHD and HDV Conversion for the Mac - divergent media If that doesn't work, you could try ClipWrap. (3) Once on your Mac's hard drive you should be able to import using iMovie. (2) Subsequently shoot any new material on the internal memory stick and copy to your Mac using the card reader. (b) Dub to memory stick using procedure in manual, then copy memory stick contents using a card reader. (a) Copy to PC using this procedure: Sony eSupport - Using your Sony® Camera with a Macintosh® Computer (1) If your material is on the internal camera HDD, either copy it to your Mac or dub it to a memory stick. Yes if the Sony utility is transcoding to MP4 that could take a while but even then it shouldn't be overnight. The fact it takes so long implies the Sony utility is doing more than transferring - it must be transcoding, which you don't want. You just press F4 to start Launchpad and start typing the name.Įven at USB 2 speed, transferring a fairly large AVCHD package shouldn't take more than 1 hr. I want to see how much system resources are being utilized to determine where the bottleneck lies - my bet is on Sony's software. Hopefully it will be done when I get back home this afternoon.īringing me to this: I need to find out where the process monitor is located. I eventually had to get out of the house this morning and set it up to do the remaining files. I'm not impressed, but I'm not sure if it's all the fault of my hardware, but I think I am still within the timeframe I can take it back and get something more powerful if necessary - I didn't buy a Mac to hurry up and wait.but I digress. The camera utilization was low (there's a disk activity light which only blinked after a long pause). I did a few files one at a time, and they took an agonizingly long time - so much for Quad-core i5 processing power.sheesh. I don't know for sure if it's transcoding, but when I awoke I found that it failed partway through and I had to re-select some files. The problem is not transfer speed from the camera it's the speed of change to. Unfortunately, ReWrapAVCHD wasn't able to read it either.
